We thought that it was by no means unjustified, that it was even useful and necessary to say before all what is the chronological sequence of the characters, and also what idea each has of God: therefore we have carried out with much precision the exposition of these details.

Subsequently, Julian seizes hands-on military and administrative control from his 'advisors,' and, against expectations, experiences overwhelming military success over the Germans at Strasbourg. Upon the death of Helena, Julian's wife and Constantius's sister, and in the face of Constantius's ever-increasing manic paranoia, Julian undertakes a Cited by: 2.

The Julian mentioned in the title is Julian of Eclanum who was born at Eclanum in Italy in and died in Sicily ca. After the death of his wife, Julian joined the clergy of his native diocese and eventually succeeded his father as bishop. With a mastery of Greek and Latin Julian combined a great store of theological learning which, however, was tainted with Pelagian errors.

It is here conjectured that, in his original three books, now lost, Julian wrote an extremely strong invective against the literary fabrication of the Galilaeans, and against the roles of Constantine and Eusebius, who Julian (it is conjectured) actually named, as the authors and perpetuators of the "fiction of men composed by wickedness".

1 Julian is criticising St. John's Gospel, as he criticised its prologue in Against the Galilaeans, Book 1. He attacks John 1. 29; cf. John 1. 2 Matthew "And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child; and the children rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death." Against the Galileans (Ancient Greek: Κατὰ Γαλιλαίων; Latin: Contra Galilaeos), meaning Christians, was a Greek polemical essay written by the Roman emperor Julian, commonly known as Julian the Apostate, during his short reign (–).Despite having been originally written in Greek, it is better known under its Latin name, probably due to its extensive reference in the.

That man is born with sin is shown from the baptism of infants, from the rite of exorcism and exsufflation in the baptism of infants, from the words of the Apostle to the Romans and Corinthians.

This is an excellent volume of the Emperor Julian's perhaps most remembered essay against, as he called the Christians, the Glileans. While apparently familiar with the works of Celsus and Porphyry, Julian enthusiastically tries his hand at pointing out what he perceived as the contradictions and inherent problems of Christianity, which, prior to his reign, had become the state religion of the /5(8).
